Police in Chicago say two people were shot to death in an apparent murder-suicide at the Old Navy clothing store in the heart of the city’s Loop retail corridor.
A man and a woman at the store died in an apparent murder-suicide, said Officer John Mirabelli, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department.

Shots were fired just before 11 a.m. at the Old Navy store at 35 N. State Street.
Hundreds of people were outside the store as police officers investigated.

“The boyfriend goes into the store and starts shooting,” one source said.
Chicago Police Chief of Patrol Eugene Williams said the man and woman were found in a restricted area open only to employees. He said the woman worked at the store.

The Police Chief held a news conference at the scene of the crime this afternoon. He reported that officers on patrol saw employees running out of the Old Navy store at about 11 a.m. this morning. Employees told police that shots had been fired inside the store. The officers went into the store and found two people, a man and a woman, in the basement who had suffered gunshot wounds. Both were in the 20s. The basement area is restricted to employees only.

Williams said the man and woman knew each other, but he would not confirm their relationship. He also would not confirm a murder-suicide, but said, “We believe at this time the male was the offender.” He did not know if the store had surveillance cameras, nor how the gunman got inside.
