Mean and scared dog becomes happy after getting a hug

Video

Description:

Edie the dog was so scared at the shelter and was scheduled to be euthanized. She was so lucky to have someone visit the shelter and save her life. A hug changed her completely. This video shows how these dogs can be easily managed with a little bit of love and patience.

  13. Comment  by blank

The problem is half of you idiots are gonna think you can go get a dog thats been abused and is violent and dangerous and give it a hug and the world will be all better. Newsflash… THIS ISNT NORMAL! It takes a long time to bring a dog back after its been abused… or any animal for that matter.

    • Comment  by Rick

      Man, lighten up.

    • Comment  by mehmeh

Agreed. My dog was mildly neglected for about three months before i got him. I am well versed in dog training. Yet i still have a scar from where his tooth tore through my hand. I forgave him because I knew he was still coping. But it’s no simple matter to rescue a dog.

  14. Comment  by Alexander

Sooner or later everyone needs a hug. Thanks fo saving Edie.

  15. Comment  by daniel

@ “blank”…why make a negative out of something positive. this result may not be “normal”, but why not accept the fact that this was a success? calling complete strangers “idiots” pretty much places you into that category. an innocent life was saved — this is a good thing. so this ten pound dog was “violent and dangerous”? take your cynical-ass self elsewhere, and stop spreading your negativity amongst others who are well-meaning people.

  16. Comment  by Vettech

What “Blank” says is true. This is HIGHLY unusual. My first thought (as a vet tech) was “Greeeaaat. Now everyone is going to try pulling fractious dogs onto their laps expecting the dog to calm down. Then more dogs are going to get euthanised for fear-biting.”

Don’t try this at home, kids. If not for the sake of your limbs, at least for the sake of the poor dog because you decided to try to be a hero and, as a result, ended up getting it euthanised for biting your ass!!!

    • Comment  by blank

Thanks. I’m not cynical or negative I’m realistic. I DONT want to see people get hurt. Ive grown up on a working farm with over 60 head of horses and horses are the same way. You cant just run up to a scared animal and hug them… Most cases they think your attacking them and will fight. Don’t get me wrong, I love animals… All of them, but I went to college for horses and honestly too many people dont understand the thought process that animals have. I just dont wanna see anyone get hurt is all.

      • Comment  by Larry

“but I went to college for horses ”

What a coincidence. If it wasn’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college.

    • Comment  by 911 Operator

Absolutely agree! I was waiting for someone to get bitten - this is NOT the typical response and I do not recommend anyone doing this w/o proper training!! Even then bites happen! Does not mean that I’m not glad someone gave that dog a second chance, though.

    • Comment  by lj5959

I agree, very unusual but a great outcome for this dog. I rescued a maltese from an abusive situation and it took many weeks to get her to trust me and for me to adopt her out to the right person. She is now in a fantastic home with wonderful people but I assure you it took weeks to rehabiliate.

  17. Comment  by Aszeet

I agree–and theres nothing wrong with being realistic. This is really unusual–it is a good aid for proving that it is possible at all, so long as it comes with the warning that tho its possible, it isn’t *normally* so quick.

  18. Comment  by Realist

Some of you are going to try this and get your faces bitten off..

  19. Comment  by nick

are you going to make out with the dog, because it looks like you make out with guys too

  20. Comment  by Arlene

When my dogs heard poor Edie screaming on the video they started shaking and crying. I had to turn off the volume. I thought this was a very important video. People need to know that dogs in shelters are terrified and one should not judge their personality at the shelter. They all deserve a chance.

  21. Comment  by Robert

They try to make it sound good. the fact is they don’t let dogs out without making money off them. free dogs to loving a family
if they stop making money off them, and charging to mutilate a poor dog and tell you that they are “FIXING” the dog.

    • Comment  by JRo

Robert-please name 1 FOR PROFIT dog/animal shelter. They simply do not exist. Money from adoption fees go to support the physical/business structure and operating costs. Most rely heavily on private donations and sometimes tax dollars from local communities as well as people who donate their time generously to help run the facility. “Fixing” or neutering a domesticated animal is the RESPONSIBLE choice to avoid having animals end up in places exactly like what you are criticizing. Also, sliding scale fees are generally provided for people who cannot afford private veterinary care.

    • Comment  by keith

that’s right, that is the reason I will never get a dog at a shelter because they “fix” them. Neutering a male dog screws the dog up for life.

      • Comment  by em-e-chan

neutering or fixing an animal does not “screw them up”. I’ve had a number of male dogs all of them we’re absolutely fine after. Sometimes it actually makes the dog less agressive and while it’s an option we may all not LOVE it’s a better then letting them repreduce and have unwanted puppies who are starving on the street.

      • Comment  by Mehmeh

well unless you plan on letting him mate left and right he’s going to be frustrated and want to vent his frustrations by chewing, trying to run away and by aggressive behavior. and if you do let him plan on mating all the time, shame on you because now you’re part of the overpopulation problem.

  22. Comment  by EveSerene

The producers of the video should definitely state first thing for others to not try this at home unless trained to handle animals. This is unusual, and these guys could easily have been bitten. Even Caesar gets bitten =) and he is an expert dog handler.

It is wonderful to see the exceptions, it always is. Shelters are not for profit, but the vets on site have the authority to put down any they feel are “un-adoptable.” Many are just like this dog, scared, and need an expert to work with them. Unfortunately, costs outweigh what’s right. Cheaper to put them down. If people wanted to pay higher adoption fees, maybe…but probably won’t happen.

  23. Comment  by Jamie

That looks just like my little Maltese Mickey that was lost in S. Georgia. =(

I can’t believe the Lancaster place this was referenced kills animals NEVER GO THERE!!!! BOYCOTT THEM, THEY ARE A KILL SHELTER!!!

    • Comment  by JRo

Please refer to my previous post….please neuter your pets…irresponsible breeding and ignorant ownership is how animals end up in these shelters. Do your research. Understand what it takes to take an animal into your guardianship. Appropriate animal stewardship is a great responsibility that is not to be taken lightly. They are not toys that can be discarded without care.

  27. Comment  by Dawn

Thank you for such a beautiful experience and Music!! i am in tears! Bless your Heart and Patience!!!!

  28. Comment  by cam

Oh man, nikki is right. Come on, don’t support this shelter! It’s obvious they didn’t try something as simple as connecting with the animal before deciding to put it down. Yikes, that’s pretty sad.

    • Comment  by not an idiot

Obviously Cam and Nikki have never worked in animal welfare. Euthanasia is necessary. When animals come to a shelter that have been so badly abused that they are violent, or are fatally injured, or have been fought, these animals need the kindness that is euthanasia. When you don’t support shelters that have to euthanize, you’re just making the pet population problem worse because you’re taking support away from the very organizations that can help.

No one gets into the animal welfare scene because they don’t like animals. No one works at a shelter so they can kill animals. They save as many as possible and, with kindness and love, send the rest to heaven.

Next time, think about what you’re saying before you get on your soapbox.

loved the video. Keep up the good work

  32. Comment  by Nik

This video had me in tears from about 30 secs or so in and I didn’t stop til it finished. It’s hard to think that humans can treat an animal in such a way as to leave it so frightened and poorly cared for that it ends up in this situation, but seeing that there’s always someone willing to try to correct it gives me faith in humanity.

We got a small dog from a shelter in much the same state, terrified and poorly nourished and matted. He’s still a little monster in terms of temper, but he’s also an absolute darling. All it takes is a little love and patience.

  33. Comment  by jim

Very nice video. Whats the name of that song?

  34. Comment  by Björn

Okay, maby the song wasn´t necesary, but what you did was great. My parents once took care of a dog that came in to my moms work to be put down, and he was completely terrifyed of raised voices, especially from men (a problem with three guys in the family).
But still, practice (mostly for us), patience and love and the dog changed completely. It can be done!

    • Comment  by Stolen

But still, even if it can be kinda cured, is it really worth all the effort and time, and by the looks of that video A LOT of money-spending on various cleaningfluids? It might be better to kill off a sort of OK-dog and instead, buy a puppy, or if you want to avoid the cost or their months of fabulous escapades in indoor toiletry and random douchebaggery (MY WII-MOTE, EATEN!), get a dog from a shelter that isn’t fucking insanetarded and beheads a young child every time someone raises their voice.

It’s not like they’re rare. They will probably outlive humans and go straight back to evolution (eaten by wolfs).

I did cry a bit though.

And later laughed hysterically when it was shaved.

They should shave all fucked-up shelter-dogs, and then ignite them.

      • Comment  by Stolen

Oh, and of course film it and distribute HD-DVD’s. This is a deep chest of gold, people! Invest today.

        • Comment  by em-e-chan

psychos like you aren’t rare should we shave you and light you on fire?

          • Comment  by em-e-chan

Perhaps we should then film THAT instead. I know at least the people at peta would buy it ’cause they’re like the oppisite and of the animal lovers/haters psycho scale.

          • Comment  by Stolen

No need to shave me, cause i don’t piss and **** all over myself constantly.

I do however think they should ignite certain people in soceity every now and then. A genetic pool-cleansing mostly focused on unhealthy, stupid people who think they save the world by donating 10 dollars every now and then.

So go right ahead and do that, I will be first in line when it’s released and on the edge of my seat while watching.

  35. Comment  by Meh

Just another dog. If people wouldn’t breed so many dogs this wouldn’t happen in the first place. One could probably say the same about humans as well?

  36. Comment  by John

This is great but the music is so appalling.

  37. Comment  by SAMMM

    What an ugly dog.

  38. Comment  by Jackie

  39. Comment  by wam

“Nothing is more inhuman than a world where there would be only human”.
Thank a lot for what you’re doing (from France)

  40. Comment  by Miranda

Okay, I think the point of the video was not “Try this! It will work every time!” but more “don’t assume the worst of an animal that may just be frightened and in need of love and patience”. I found it very touching and I had tears in my eyes. No, simply pulling an abused, scared animal in for a hug is not going to work every time. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t at least try to show it love in some way. I encourage everyone to ignore the ridiculous ignorant comments and focus on the broader positive message of the video.

    • Comment  by Stolen

Who the **** are you calling ridiculous and ignorant? That dog is RUINED, for life. It can never, ever become a normal dog. And sure, if you want to take the time out of your life try to take care of a FUBAR-puppy, then go right ahead.

But don’t call the people who thinks that’s not a really important thing ignorant.

Look at this video on dog-care: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjiNMZxqd9I
      (youtube-account needed, very graphic dog/cat-killing)

I’m not saying that’s an ideal way to take care of dogs (or any animal, for that matter) but do you think those people (and the people who enjoy the dog-flesh at the restaurant) give a **** about this retarded old woman/gay person-dog? Nope. And there a quite a large amount of humans between that view on dogs and yours, so basically you’re a person who’s calling 50-90% of the world ignorant.

      Great job!

  41. Comment  by pointy

I really wanted to watch this, but the camera work made me nauseated.

  42. Comment  by Pitbull

Have you thought about trying that with a Pitbull? Didnt think so!

  43. Comment  by renee fenn

i do this often w/ pits.

calm people have better lucky helping scared dogs, skill is build w/practice ( including many mistakes ), and a mutual respect is establish when using your instincts, just like this dog used instincts and these people did.
these kind people and this submissive defensive dog both have great intentions.
less direct eye contact, less head touching, less back rubbing the cute dawg and more endorphin releasing chest rubbing could lead to quicker results, depending on the dogs temperament.

    it does happen this fast.
faster! ( change the emotion change the behavior )
confident people help snapping dogs. nervous people might not want to get bite. if teeth do touch skin, us pulling away is what dog is hoping for, so move toward mouth to help dog cope and learn snapping does not work anymore. ( unstable pet w/submit and look to you for guidance )

  44. Comment  by Jake the pitbull

  45. Comment  by snowbird

All I know is that we adopted pets from shelters down through the years because we could not afford “fancy” ones. We were richly rewarded and most all of them were trainable. They did not behave like some people think shelter animals would. They became our family and some of them we could never “just forget.” I marvel sometimes how that many animals behave so much better then many “humans” I have known and manifest much better manners. Strange indeed……….

  48. Comment  by Joy

Re comments above about boycotting kill shelters. Adopting their animals will not “support” them in killing animals, I don’t think…, but will be one less on death row

  49. Comment  by Andi

Edie is clearly a Chinese Crested Powderpuff. Looks to be a purebred. Note the wide stance of her front legs, her high waist, and the length of her muzzle, which is apparent once she’s shorn. These dogs make absolutely wonderful pets. They are very gentle and docile and sweet as can be. When their fur is long and well groomed, it is glorious. Non-shedding, too. The Chinese Crested breed is rare enough in the U.S. that Cresties are often mistaken for Maltese, Poodles and even lovable mutts, especially if they are of the Powderpuff, and not Hairless, variety. I hope that someone gives Edie, this beautiful and deserving Crestie, a loving, forever home soon. Someone at the shelter should contact Chinese Crested Rescue and tell them about Edie, which would greatly improve her chances of adoption.

  55. Comment  by Caitlin

Clearly the poor thing has an issue with leashes. Maybe if they didn’t back the dog into a corner, loom above it with a leash and frighten it to all hell it wouldn’t seem so dramatic. I have rescued many dogs with problems from neglect/abuse who would freak out if treated this way. The guy was holding things above the dog and his free hand held a strange object (the camera) if I were a dog I’d be nervous too!

  56. Comment  by kek

What a disgusting looking dog. If that thing ever s*** on my floor I would euthanize immediately.

It disgusts me to see people domesticating and breeding animals purely for the domestication. Thanks you to guys dogs have smaller brains then their predecessors and are generally unable to serve their purpose as a organism in these environments besides enjoyment for sick pleasure for humans.

  68. Comment  by Emma

Sorry - I appreciate the sentiment behind this but effectively forcing this little dog to accept human contact could so easily have resulted in her attacking wildly to defend herself.
The way to do this would have been to get her used to a person quietly, no force (note she didn’t cack herself or scream until trapped under the table and leashed!), plenty of great treats and a bit of time.

Forcing an animal like this is dangerous, she started out growling to warn folk to leave her alone, and they ignored that. Is she gonna bother growling next time shes fearful, or is she just gonna go straight to biting? Who knows… not you, and not the folk who rescue her either. No one will until they find out the hard way.
I hope no one watches this who has a fearful dog and thinks this is the way to fix it - you are incredibly lucky that this dog chose ’shut down’ and submission rather than to fight back. Poor dog.
