Guatemala Sinkhole Video - The giant sinkhole appeared after the tropical storm Agatha hit Guatemala. The country is no stranger to sinkholes either. In February 2007, a large sinkhole appeared in a poor neighborhood in northeast Guatemala city that killed 3 people. The sinkhole was 100.5 meters deep and was created by fluid from a sewer that dissolved the rock underneath.

The hole, which formed at a street intersection Guatemala City, looks like a near-perfect circle and according to reports, it spread beneath a three-story structure, which fell into it. A private security guard is believed to have been killed.

Sinkholes are created when the underlying limestone or similar rock is eroded away by water that creates subsurface caves and caverns. The ground above the eroding rock then falls into the space which is what appears to have happened in the intersection in the photo.

Here’s a youtube video of the giant Guatemalan sinkhole.

According to scientists, sinkholes appear from time to time during major storms. It could be caused naturally such as in this case or it could be caused by man itself such as the last one back in 2007.
