        • Comment  by Archy

It says 102 in the video and 103 in the description. No need to insult Bob.

        • Comment  by Syries

102, it even says at the end of the video

        • Comment  by justincredible

I think my favorite part about your response is the fact that you’re a dumbass. It says the video was filmed when he was 102 years old at the end. :)

        • Comment  by Aaron

It says 102 on the video though, which I assume is a more accurate source; dumbass.

          • Comment  by Mr Pie

not if it’s a year old video

  2. Comment  by its me

Very good, but I think I liked it better when Gallagher did it in the 70’s or was it 80’s

  3. Comment  by Zack

    Very cool

  4. Comment  by Aaron

Definitely better when Gallagher did it.

Simplified spelling society for the win. This man rocks.

  6. Comment  by Ash

so it wasn’t because i was a “slow learner” in english class. it was because english was stupid :D

  7. Comment  by I can spell.

Stupid American you want everyone to be able spell? Then why don’t you try reading instead of sitting in front of a television for half your life. Failing that go to school.

    • Comment  by Blanket Statements

Sweeping generalizations sure are fun, eh?

    • Comment  by Huh?

I think you are missing the point of this. Maybe you are dum.

  8. Comment  by I can use Grammar

I believe you mean, “Then why don’t you try reading instead of sitting in front of a television for half your life?”

  9. Comment  by I can use Grammar

I believe you mean, “half of your life?” instead of “half your life.”

    • Comment  by John

“Half your life” in this context may not, strictly speaking, be correct. It is, however, entirely acceptable - particularly when used in rhetoric.

    • Comment  by Donkey Punch

      Embrace the contraction fool

  10. Comment  by Common Sense

Yeah for someone who can spell, you sure fail in using grammar.

  11. Comment  by Rational person

I hope you realize America never invented English. At best we have tweaked it. Now learn some history Eurofag who thinks he can spell.

    • Comment  by Donkey Punch

Yeh, you just dumbed it down, along with everything else!

  12. Comment  by A little common sense

I pretty sure that the man knows how to spell he just feels that the English language contradicts itself various times, and if we took a hint from other languages we could simplify our English. That way every comment page won’t be half about the topic and half about proper English.

  13. Comment  by MC W

Talk about a screwed-up language eh? Blame it on the Anglophones’ tendency to absorb elements of every language they encounter, for the past five hundred years and even further. Simplified spelling should arrive within about forty years.

    • Comment  by Mad J

Forty years? Really? Certain people have been advocating such a reform since the 12th century. It didn’t catch on then, why should it catch on now? I, for one, am not going to change the way I spell simply to accommodate dum(!) people. Furthermore, what happens when people forget how to spell the way it is now? Will people go back and transcribe every text that was written before the reform? No. So in order to read text from x year prior, you will need to know how to spell the old way. That, my friend, would mean that angloscribes would need to learn about twice what they needed to previously, fantastically undermining the entire premise!

Just get used to it and make a joke every once in a while…

  14. Comment  by BOB

Did you realize the man that presented the silly video was 102? He looked GREAT! I can’t even imagine all the changes he has seen in his life, 102 years…WOW!

  16. Comment  by Ayla

That guy has a typerwiter…. Damn.

  17. Comment  by Scarrob

Respect to the old man, but education was obviously lacking somewhat in his day.
Maybe one day Americans will learn to speak the English language properly but then again pigs may fly.

    • Comment  by fuaijie

and what is the “proper” way to speak the English language? Last time I checked the correct way to speak a language is the way you were taught. There is no language, dialect, or accent that is better than any other. Anyone who says otherwise is being swept up in cultural preferences.

    • Comment  by Mathieu

You meant to write “learn to speak the English language correctly?” It’s impossible to speak properly according to every standard and context adopted for our language. Also, you meant to write “but then again, pigs may fly.” Dont forget your commas, you educated t***!

Yanks should stop changing stuff just to suit a particular inadequacy on their part, a billion is a f*****g lot less than it should be, a pint is less than it should be and there’s now 2 ways to spell many English words thanks to the yanks!

Trying to make things simpler leads to you actually making them more complicated!

And the spellings are not Dumb they just have History, you know that thing yanks don’t have much of!

    • Comment  by Jim

We had history, we just got rid of it. A sort of “trimming the fat”, if you will.

  21. Comment  by Engrish

Well the next major language is gona be Chinese, good luck with that one!

  22. Comment  by Dookie

Old English, Saxon and Old Norse plus many many other European languages go to make up English as we know it, this comes from the thousands of years of history on the European content, Its call a historic relic and is far from Dumb!.. which FYI technically means to be mute!

You’ll find that the “dumb” spellings have very interesting reasons for being that way… you harmonise everything you will loose the history behind those words, for some reason Americans don’t seem to think this side of history is important to them, which is a terribly arrogant way of thinking, but then again that is the American culture.

  23. Comment  by thomas

Ummm, god love the old man, but take a few weeks to study the history of the language and you will realize the beauty of those ‘inconsistencies’. It is a well traveled language and deserves its place in his 102 year old throat. Thanks, English!
